Whatever be the reason, the company is finally listening to the users demand and developing the feature to disable the online status. In a screenshot released by the reliable WhatsApp news source WABetaInfo you can get a preview of this feature. You can see that in future you will be able to choose who can see when you are online on WhatsApp.

This configuration will be available within your last seen settings. There will be two new added options – ‘Everyone’ and ‘Same as Last Seen’. If you select ‘My Contacts’ for both options of ‘Online’ then non – contacts cannot see when you are ‘Online’.
