Microsoft Introduced New Medical AI Tool: MAI-DxO

Microsoft introduced a new medical AI tool called MAI-DxO. It means Medical AI Diagnostic Orchestrator. It can solve complex medical cases with great success. Microsoft says it is more accurate than expert doctors. The tool was trained on 304 real patient studies.

These cases came from the New England Journal of Medicine. Each case was difficult and needed deep medical thinking. The AI tool was built by Microsoft’s AI health team. Mustafa Suleyman leads this team at Microsoft AI.

MAI-DxO works by acting like five AI doctors. Each one takes a role in solving the case. One checks symptoms, another suggests tests or ideas. Together, they follow a process called “chain of debate.” This step-by-step method solves the case carefully.

AI Tool Was Tested on Real-World Tough Cases

Microsoft tested the tool on 304 real-world cases. These were not simple exam questions from books. They were actual medical mystery cases from real life. Microsoft built something called Sequential Diagnosis Benchmark or SD Bench.

This benchmark tested both doctors and AI systems. The doctors had five years of experience or more. They were from the US and the UK. All had to solve each case step-by-step without help.

Microsoft added AI models from OpenAI, Meta, Google, Anthropic, xAI, and DeepSeek. MAI-DxO used all models together like a smart team. Instead of guessing, it took careful decisions at each stage.

Results showed the AI tool got 85.5% answers right. The human doctors got only 20% of the answers correct. Even better, MAI-DxO used fewer expensive tests. This helped reduce overall medical costs.

Why This New AI Tool Is a Big Step

Delayed or wrong diagnosis is a big global issue. Many people wait a long time for the right answer. MAI-DxO may help reduce that waiting time. It may also reduce the cost of medical tests.

Microsoft said over 50 million health searches happen daily. These are through tools like Bing and Copilot. People trust AI tools for health questions already. So Microsoft wants to make AI smarter and safer.

The company has also made tools like RAD-DINO and Dragon Copilot. These tools help doctors with voice and radiology tasks. Microsoft is now testing MAI-DxO in hospitals. It plans to open an SD Bench for researchers soon.
