Airtel Released 5G Dual Mode: A Major Transition

Bharti Airtel has begun transitioning its 5G network to a dual-mode system, combining Non-Standalone (NSA) and Standalone (SA) technologies.

This dual setup will help the company offer faster speeds and more stable connections. Airtel Managing Director Gopal Vittal confirmed that the migration has already started for Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) customers across 13 circles in India.

Vittal said pilot tests are already happening in a few circles. A commercial rollout will follow soon as 5G traffic continues to grow.

Airtel’s dual-mode 5G will also support the company’s research partnership with Ericsson and Volvo Group. This partnership focuses on advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI),

According to Vittal, 5G has not yet fulfilled its global promise. Around the world, telecom companies still struggle to find new business opportunities beyond faster speeds. He noted that many operators tested standalone 5G and network slicing, but those efforts remain small in scale.

Despite this, Airtel is following a careful, demand-based approach to deploying its standalone network.

The company already has nationwide 5G coverage across more than 7,000 towns and 20,000 villages. Vittal said Airtel’s strategy focuses on customer experience over technology hype.

Over the next few years, Airtel plans to refarm its 4G spectrum into 5G standalone gradually. This process will take five to six years and will happen in phases.

The upgrade will require minimal capital spending, as it is mostly software-driven. Airtel’s networks can switch to standalone mode with simple software updates.
